Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/19/2018
Handled by Wayne Gretzky on April 11th, 1998 in Detroit against the Wings, as proclaimed along the shaft in Sharpie ink, this Hespeler 5500 holds a stunning bold, blue signature with the added “99”. As expected, we find the black “Jack the Gripper” handle at one end and a perfect baby-powdered bulldog tape job at the business end. Factory markings on the shaft include the “558” batch number, the 120-125 Flex marking and the “Gretzky” stamping up near the knob. Marks left from contact with opposing sticks decorate the shaft and the blade tape shows obvious puck marks. This stick has been specially customized with a code written on the butt end and a small hologram sticker added by our consignor.
The box score from the April 11th regular season tilt against the Red Wings shows Detroit came away with a win by a score of 5 to 2. Wayne Gretzky assisted on a goal scored by Alex Kovalev at 16:55 of the 3rd.
