Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/26/2019
Originally issued to sell Frontenac Export Ale in 1931, we have a wonderful original Frontenac advertising sign featuring the 1930-31 Stanley Cup champion Montreal Canadiens. At approx. 13” x 30” and featuring wonderful full-colour lithography, the entire Habs squad is lined-up in full on-ice poses, with facsimile signatures below each. The photo was taken by famous Montreal lensman Rice, with the text along the base reminding all that the Canadiens were crowned Stanley Cup champions in both 1929-30 and 1930-31. Set in a painted-over period frame with the original “Black Horse Beer” advertising letters visible along the bottom section, the manufacturer “Dawes” is also visible along the top.
Exhibiting heavy wear, a number of stains are visible along with water damage within the left side, with small areas of paper loss including within the bottom right corner. The center section appears somewhat “bowed”, with toning and creasing also visible, along with some white residue over the centralized text at the base. The Black Horse frame also shows heavy wear, with chipping and mounting holes, with a small section of material loss along the top left edge. Despite the condition issues to both the poster and frame, both survive admirably, with the display value only somewhat diminished.
