The last surviving Canadian father of Confederation, Sir Charles Tupper entered office as Canada’s 6th Prime Minister in 1896, serving for just over two months. The Premier of Nova Scotia from 1864 to 1867, Tupper later held multiple cabinet positions under Prime Minister Sir John A. Macdonald, including Minister of Customs (1873–74) and Minister of Public Works (1878–79). We have a signed cabinet photo of the Amherst native. At 10 ¼” x 13” and affixed to a slightly larger backing, the photo was then affixed to a grey cabinet mount, with full dimensions of approx 11 ½” x 14 ½”. Tupper is pictured in profile, with his tweed jacket and mutton chops well defined and detailed, with his attractive fountain pen signature placed within the bottom right. There is a bit of loss, with the “A” and “R” of “CHARLES” light but visible. Tupper passed the day before Halloween in 1915, at age 94.
The photo itself exhibits surface wear including a few scratches, with light corner wear to the mount and staining over the reverse. There is also a repaired 4” tear over the middle right, with this repair continuing over the reverse.
