Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2017
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/21/2017
Robert Johnson took to the ice and the hit the books over two full years at the University of Minnesota in 1953 and 1954. Lettering in ice hockey, Bob had the great fortune to play under Hockey Hall of Fame coaching giant John Mariucci while with the Gophers. Had you been out for a stroll on campus at the time, you just might have spotted the young Johnson on his way to the rink in this striking plum Varsity letterman sweater. The heavy, coarse wool sweater features a thick-ribbed waist and lengthy cuffs and is tagged in the neck by Al Aldritt Athletic Goods of Minneapolis with a size 42 fly tag. A heavy golden chenille letter "M" sits squarely at the chest and it shows 3 one-inch tears where the material has split. Otherwise, the sweater has been well-preserved and displays no holes or damage of any sort. Obtained in an estate sale of personal items that had been saved by Bob Johnson and will come with a letter of provenance.
