Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2017
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/21/2017
From a season that saw the powerful Detroit Red Wings successfully defend their Stanley Cup title and the Topps Company enter the hockey card market come these absolutely gorgeous collectibles, their bright vivid colors always a treat to behold. The red Detroit uniforms are riveting, and the set's key card, picturing NHL scoring champ Gordie Howe, has been graded EX-MT 6 by PSA. Those of teammates Sawchuk, Lindsay and Delvecchio are close to perfect and slabbed NM 7, the same as Andy Bathgate’s card, with the Rangers’ colors also oh so aesthetically pleasing. Also graded are 3-Howell and 5-Kelly at EX-MT 6, 41-Stanley at EX+ 5.5 and two at EX 5; 1-Gamble and 10-Worsley. The raw rest mirror the encapsulated examples, with EX, EX+, EX-MT, EX-MT+ and NM present and two commons not quite making it to EX. Seven bonus duplicates are described on our website.
The duplicates at EX or better are 27-Pronovost, 48-Sanford (OC), 54-Mosienko and 56-Laprade (OC), with 1-Gamble (VG-EX) and 6-Chevrefils (VG) joined by 26-Rollins, the latter with suspect coloring. All-in-all, a superb ensemble, with many hobbyists considering Topps’ inaugural hockey card effort as the most beautiful of all-time!
