Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/2/2022
Defecting to the WHA after a partial season of 16 games with the NHL’s California Golden Seals, goaltender Gary Kurt spent three seasons with the Phoenix Roadrunners (1974-77) and won 25 games in 1974-75, leading the club to a playoff berth. This historic signed mask was worn by Kurt during his time with the Roadrunners. Made by noted mask maker Ernie Higgins, with his label affixed to the interior, the mask features a lightning pattern in Phoenix colours with roadrunners above each socket by artist Jan Chavez. The interior padding remains intact (a few pads look to be relocated), with heavy wear and soiling to the strapping and considerable rusting to the clasps. There is a Cooper SK2 back plate, with Kurt signing the interior in black marker, with the signature displaying well. The mask shows heavy wear throughout commensurate with it’s former use and age including numerous small chips to the finish along with surface abrasions.
