Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2020
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/20/2020
A favourite with collectors and featuring rarely seen earlier examples, this lot contains a wonderful vintage Montreal Canadiens postcard collection of 20 including desirable JD McCarthy specimens, highlighted by a postcard signed by HOF member Bill Durnan. First, we have 8 postcards from the 1947-48 season with facsimile team signatures over each reverse, with examples present for the Rocket, Durnan, Reardon, Blake, Lach, Bouchard, Harmon (signed) and Roger Leger. This is followed by 4 postcards with JD McCarthy reverses including Reardon (2) and Harmon (2) and 2 postcards with JD McCarthy/postal reverses including Durnan (signed) and Lach. Rounding out this rare Habs’ postcard lot, we have blank-backed postcards for the Rocket, Blake, Bouchard, Lach, Durnan and Roger Leger. We should also note that this is the first Bill Durnan postcard signed by the legendary keeper we have ever offered.
The Durnan-signed postcard feature’s a fabulous and bold black ink signature with absolutely no issues, with “1” handwritten near the signature, with the postcard itself showing surface wear with residue over each corner from scrapbook removal, with toning over the reverse along with lengthy ink inscriptions. The Harmon-signed postcard displays nicely, with the green ink signature personalized, with light to moderate wear to the postcard itself with a few small creases visible. The 4 postcards with McCarthy reverses all show just light wear, while the blank-backed postcards also show light wear including the Rocket, with light touches at the corners. Lastly, a few of the 1947-48 postcards show a bit of heavier wear, including the Bouchard (slightly rounded corners, toning and creasing) and Leger (pinholes).
