Historical Hockey Memorabilia Winter 2012

Upon America's entry into World War I in 1917, hockey legend Hobey Baker enlisted in the U.S. Army as a pilot. He flew in the famous Lafayette Escadrille, an elite squadron of the French Air Force, and participated in air battles against such German aces as Manfred von Richthofen, or the "Red Baron." Tragically, he died on December 21, 1918 in a flying accident barely a month after the armistice, while test-flying one of his squadron's planes. Amazing vintage original photograph taken in France, in sepia tone and measuring 7" x 9", taken of Baker's crashed Spad XIII airplane. The image is somber and appears in at least one of the biographies on Baker. In very good condition with some light creasing, mostly at the edges.
