The legendary Dan Bain is smiling and seated to the right of the trophies, while teammates who have also captured the Stanley Cup in February of the previous season include goalie George “Whitey” Merritt, (joining Bain on the floor), Jack Armitage (captain in ’85-86 and seated directly behind trophies), Colin “Tote” Campbell, (to the left of Armitage) and to the right, Tom Howard (directly behind Bain). The photo itself is postcard-like size at 4” by 5-1/2”, with revealing writing on the reverse of the mat detailed on our website, informing that two Vics teams are actually pictured here. A pinhole and minor peripheral wear do little to diminish this captivating, thought-provoking treasure.
Handwriting on the back of the 5-1/2” by 6-3/4” mat reads, “1st and 2nd Sevens of the Victoria Hockey Club – Winners of the Senior and Intermediate championship for the season of 1896 & 97.” Meanwhile, “Total Stanley Cup” recounts the Vics’ Stanley Cup triumph on February 14, 1896 in Montreal. “The first east-west confrontation in Stanley Cup history pitted the defending Montreal Victorias against the Winnipeg Victorias, champions of the Manitoba Hockey League. Whitey Merritt, introduced the first set of goalie pads in Stanley Cup history to the Montrealers when he skated onto the ice with a pair of white cricket pads and proceeded to register a shutout. Dan Bain scored the Cup-winning goal midway through the game and Tote Campbell added the other.” Thus, several of the men pictured here earned Winnipeg its first Stanley Cup title with a 2-0 victory!
