Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2020

Joining his famous brother as an NHL superstar beginning in the 1968-69 season as a member of the Stanley Cup-champion Montreal Canadiens, goaltender Tony Esposito was claimed on waivers by the Chicago Black Hawks the following season where he earned the coveted Calder Memorial Trophy. Tony O would guard the “Madhouse on Madison” crease for his entire HOF career, appearing in six All-Star Games while securing a trio of Vezina trophies. Hailing from the Michael Wexler collection, we have a vintage photo-matched Black Hawks jersey donned by Espo in 1976-77. A Wilson label with “44” sizing is affixed to the crossover-style collar (the jersey measures-out to a modern size 50), with a tag from supplier Gunzo’s placed directly beneath as well as a “76” year swatch near the inside seam. Styled with the famous multi-coloured Indian head team crest with chain-stitched detailing, “35” appears over the sleeves and verso in white-over-black tackle twill, with matching chain-stitched tomahawk crests over each shoulder. With no nameplate currently, there is no evidence of a former nameplate, number or shoulder patch change, with the reverse “5” showing evidence of being slightly repositioned, with this likely done due to the heavy puckering. The considerable overall wear also hints towards possibly additional use in following preseasons/training camps.
Showing marks over the sleeves and front, there are material pulls along with some pilling, with heavy puckering to the reverse “5” as mentioned. There is also a bit of staining to the “5” on the left sleeve, with team repairs over the front (4) and reverse (2). An included numeric image has been matched to all the specifics details of the team crest including lines/spots of wear patterns, as well as to specific details on the #5 on the right sleeve.
