Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/26/2019
The subject of countless newspaper editorials and cartoon caricatures throughout his 75+ years with the Boston Bruins organization, we have a collection of vintage original art featuring Milt Schmidt, with each originating from his personal collection and obtained directly from his family. Three of the pieces were done by professional artists Gene Mack and Bob Coyne, along with a fourth done by a fan and likely presented to Milt at some point. The Mack artwork includes a pair of pieces, with a framed drawing of the Kraut Line, along with a second piece featuring just Milt with charming vignettes including one mentioning other players including Syl Apps and Cyclone Taylor. The Coyne artwork feature’s Milt during his days coaching the Bruins, while the last piece feature’s a black and white drawing of the HOFer affixed to a red-coloured backing and framed. An LOA from the Schmidt family will accompany.
The Mack and Coyne pieces were all most likely produced and used at some point within either newspapers, publications or programs, with the fourth piece probably done by a fan and sent to Milt. Both Mack pieces originate from Milt’s playing days (circa late-1930s to mid-1940s), with the Mack Kraut Line artwork heavily toned, with a stain along the bottom right, framed to full dimensions of approx 17 ½” x 20” (no glass), with additional toning to the matte and wear to the frame. The second Mack piece is approx 15 ½” x 19 ½” with pencil notations and some creases and folds, with heavy toning and tears along the top border, with the artwork currently tightly rolled. The Coyne piece feature’s Milt during his coaching stint with the Bruins in the late-1950s/early-1960s, with a few small blue pencil crayon notations. Tightly rolled, the artwork also shows moderate toning, with a bit of spotting and edge wear, with some light staining within the bottom left corner. The final artwork is framed to 8” x 10”, with text written by the admirer within the bottom left that states, “Milt Schmidt is the best center playing pro hockey today”. Signed within the bottom right by the artist Dan Duggan, the drawing sports a folk art aesthetic, with just light wear to the frame.
