Considered to be the world’s first major sports artist, LeRoy Neiman first tackled the subject in the 1960s, observing athletic competitions including the World Series, Kentucky Derby, Super Bowl and Olympic Games. Neiman first applied his artwork to baseballs in 1978 at Mets spring training, granting the request of friend and business associate Charles McCabe. As their friendship evolved, 129 balls would be embellished for McCabe over the next three decades. We have one of these highly desirable specimens, with this example especially noteworthy as it depicts a self-portrait by the iconic artist. Executed during Game 2 of the 1999 NLCS at Shea Stadium, the Official NL baseball has a wonderful black marker image of Neiman with unmistakable moustache, with the artist also signing. Ticket stubs as well as a signed snapshot from the game will accompany, along with a Neiman-signed LOA.
Text below the self-portrait states “Me with unlit cigar in McCabe box 25A”, with the date and score also added along with a Neiman signature that displays well. We should also note ballpoint text that was rubbed away, with a blue hue encompassing the letters remaining. The ticket stubs both show light handling wear, with the 4” x 6” snapshot showing Neiman at the game sketching on paper, with him adding a large black marker signature to the photo along with drawing a cigar in his mouth. The accompanying LOA also sports a large and flowing blue sharpie Neiman signature.
