With four seasons spent in the OHA with St Catharines as the club was a breeding ground for future Chicago talent including Bobby Hull and Stan Mikita, Elmer “Moose” Vasko would see his first Windy City action in 1956-57, skating in 64 contests for the Black Hawks, as the club slowly improved throughout the decade. Ten seasons in Chicago would follow along with an additional three in Minnesota, with the Duparquet native competing in four NHL All-Star contests along with being named to the Second NHL All-Star Team in both 1962-63 and 1963-64.
Originating from the 1963 NHL All-Star Game held at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto, on Oct 5th, we have the "NHL All-Stars" wool sweater worn by Elmer Vasko in the match that witnessed the Stanley Cup champion Toronto Maple Leafs draw 3 to 3 with a team made up of all-stars – including Vasko - from the remaining NHL clubs. First worn in the 1961 NHL showcase by Phil Goyette, the sweater was then recycled for use within the next two years, worn in 1962 by Jean-Guy Talbot before being donned by Moose in 1963. Void of any labeling and measuring-out across the reverse to roughly a size 44, black layered felt “4”s with yellow trim grace both the front and verso, along with thick yellow stars with black trim in matching material over each breast and the reverse neckline. Yellow and black felt shoulder piping has also been utilized, with a stylish, shield-shaped crest sewn atop each shoulder section. One of the most attractive of all sweaters worn throughout the history of the All-Star Game, this desirable example will be accompanied by an LOA from Classic Auctions.
The coarse, off-white wool also sports eight eyelet configuration on tie-neck construction, along with reinforced elbows and shoulders. Small holes are visible over the front and verso, with a number of examples along with a team repair beneath the reverse neckline. A few additional small holes are present over each sleeve, with small stains situated over the upper reverse. Some pilling has also taken place, with the garment still supple and the material soft. A rare style of which we have only handled a few, this important wool sweater would look absolutely stunning framed and prominently displayed.
