There’s no mistaking the distinctive look of an Ernie Higgins goalie mask. The renowned Boston-area mask maker fabricated fiberglass wonders for a number of NHL goalies, including the likes of Gerry Cheevers and Ed Johnston of the Big, Bad Bruins. This early-1970s Higgins mask is attributed to the St. Louis Blues. It has “Wakely” written in black marker on the top left edge, most likely labeled by a Blues trainer, though Ernie Wakely never wore a Higgins mask. So it would have been used by a goalie in the Blues organization during that era. Thin strips of foam padding remain inside the mask, which its well-worn straps and No. “31” handwritten in black marker inside at the top of the right ear.
Jacques Caron wore a Higgins mask, though photos seem to show him wearing a different mask.
