Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2019

A final farewell to close out the greatest career witnessed within any sport, Wayne Gretzky said his goodbye in front of a packed MSG crowd on April 18th, 1999, with this Rangers contest his very last game. We have a wonderful and important memento from that somber setting, with a stick used by The Great One that was signed and given to teammate Todd Harvey, who despite being injured and not dressing for the game, helped Wayne during the process in which each stick had a teammate’s number added, to later be given to said players as gifts. A Hespeler CS Pro model with “Gretzky” over the upper shaft and blade stem, the stick retains the original black tape over the blade and patented gripper over the knob, with “99” burned into the blade stem (done on all his last game sticks) and “1487” handwritten on the top of the knob (Wayne’s NHL game total). Approximately 40 sticks were branded with the "99" to be used in that final hurrah, with this blade stem originally signed and dated (as the photo on the accompanying LOA from Todd Harvey shows), with this faded when acquired from Harvey, and now, completely worn away.
As mentioned, each stick given to teammates had their jersey number added before the contest, with Harvey’s “20” in silver paint pen somewhat worn but easily visible over the lower shaft. We should also note factory coding stamped in white of "5R/260" and "1/260" on the upper shaft. Light but definite use is present on the historic stick, with wear to the taped section of blade, a small mark near the front side tip, and light handling wear to the gripper as well as a small abrasion to the graphics on the upper shaft.
