Blessed with an impregnable trio that greatly influenced Montreal’s success throughout the 1970s including their Stanley Cup dynasty late in the decade, the “Big Three” - as they were commonly dubbed, included HOF defenceman Larry Robinson, Serge Savard and Guy Lapointe. We have a collection of game-used sticks from the threesome, with an example used by Savard during his rookie era in the late-1960s, with signatures present from Savard, along with Henri Richard, Gump Worsley, Yvan Cournoyer, Jean Beliveau and others. The Robinson stick saw use in the two-time James Norris-winners hands in the early-to-mid-1980s, while the Lapointe stick most likely hails from the 1978 NHL All-Star Game, with signatures present from Lapointe and Robinson, along with Lanny McDonald, Gilbert Perreault, Jean Ratelle, Steve Shutt, Rogie Vachon and others.
The Savard stick is a Victoriaville Pro with “S. Savard” and “18” over the upper shaft, with the original tape over the knob and blade tape removed. Exhibiting good use with marks to the lower shaft and wear to the underside of the blade, there is also a chip at the tip of the blade. The additional signers include Dick Duff, Rejean Houle, Chris Bordeleau and a few others. The signatures are in a mix of red and blue ink, with a few of the red examples smudged. The Robinson stick is a KOHO model with “Robinson” stamped over the upper shaft and “19” handwritten, with the original black tape over the blade and handle/knob intact. There is wear to the lower shaft and underside of the heel, with the stick remaining solid. Lastly, the Lapointe stick is a Canadien Custom Pro Fiberglass model with “Guy Lapointe” and “5” in factory graphics, with the original white tape over the knob and a bare blade – exactly the way it saw use. Light use is exhibited, with some spotting to the lower shaft. The additional signers include Wayne Stephenson, Glenn Resch, Ian Turnbull and a few others. The signatures are in blue ballpoint, with most displaying well, with just light fading.
