Awesome pair of items from Maple Leaf Gardens features a single grey seat with base plus a large framed photo of Toronto wrestling and boxing promoter Frank Tunney from the venerable arena at Carlton and Church. Just sit back and imagine all the NHL and NBA action and concerts and shows witnessed from this original No. “20” arena seat with grey metal riser-mount legs that has been nicely mounted to a beige wooden base installed by Maple Leaf Garden Industries. A silver-colored plaque along the seat’s base shows an image of MLG, along with serial number #88-043. The 22” x 32” light blue wood frame displays a big portrait photo of Tunney, who promoted boxing and wrestling at MLG for nearly 45 years.
The chair remains in good condition, with expected wear to the seat and backing, along with a small tear to the right front of the cushion. There are a few wraps of blue tape to hold the loose right arm rest in place, while the left arm rest is solid. Spot rusting is also present along the lower sections.
“Frank Tunney Wrestling & Boxing Promoter” plaques sits at the bottom of the framed photo, which also displays the original November 2000 MLG Auction tag in the bottom right corner. Tunney began promoting boxing and wrestling at Maple Leaf Gardens in the late 1930s. A longtime promoter for wrestling in Toronto, he had a strong working relationship with Vince McMahon Sr. Tunney regularly held sellout shows at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto with Whipper Billy Watson and Yvon Robert as headliners. He continued to promote wrestling matches up until his death in 1983, and his nephew, Jack Tunney, was the figurehead president of the World Wrestling Federation from 1984-95.
