Avco Cup champions for three of the final four WHA seasons, the Winnipeg Jets remain the most successful of the rebel league clubs, with netminder and Winnipegger Joe Daley seeing action with the Jets in each of their WHA seasons. We have a medal that was presented to Daley by the City of Winnipeg for his status as a 1979 Avco Cup champion, along with a blanket that was given to Daley during the player exchange at the 1977-78 Tokyo hockey series vs the Russians. At 2” in diameter, the gold-coloured medal has “Outstanding Achievement Award” in raised letters over the obverse along with a City of Winnipeg coat of arms, with “Joe Daley” engraved over the reverse along with “Winnipeg Jets” and “World Hockey Association Champions 1978-79”. In gorgeous condition with just handling wear, the medal comes in its original blue velvet box (4” x 3” x 1 ¼”) with City of Winnipeg coat of arms over the interior lid. The 26” x 40” blanket is in solid red felt with sewn wool tassels, with an affixed embroidered patch that shows Canadian and Russian hockey sticks along with “Ice Hockey Match in Tokyo ’77-‘78” and “CCCP vs Canada”. The blanket remains in very good condition, with just a few blemishes. The exhibition games in Tokyo vs the Russians at the Yoyogi Arena totaled 3, with the Jets bowing out in each to the powerful Soviets.
