Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/18/2019
Drafted by the NHL and WHA in 1973, defenseman Dennis Owchar first saw action in the OHA with both St Catharines and Toronto, winning a Memorial Cup with the latter in 1973. We have the Pittsburgh draft choice’s serving tray and watch that were presented for his status as a Memorial Cup champion with the Marlboros, with both items originating from his personal collection. At 10” in diameter and featuring a wonderfully engraved floral pattern, the tray has the particulars listed, with the text reading in full, “Presented to the 1973 Memorial Cup Champions Toronto Marlboros by the City of Toronto”. Additional engraved text beneath has the facsimile signatures of both the mayor and city clerk. Heavy tarnishing is prevalent throughout, along with numerous scratches to the surface, but despite these typical concerns, the tray displays beautifully. The precision watch was manufactured by prominent maker Gruen, with a CAHA logo over the lower portion of the dial and “Memorial Cup Montreal – Dennis Owchar – Champions May 1973” engraved over the reverse, along with “Gruen 10K G.F.”. Currently missing its band, the wind-up mechanism appears to be working, with moderate to heavier wear throughout including a few scratches to the face.
