Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2020

Born in Belleville, Ontario, thirteen years after the close of the Civil War, Richard “Dickie” Boon excelled as a sportsman, especially proficient in speed skating, rowing, canoeing and hockey. First starring for Montreal’s "Young Crystals" in the mid-1890s, Boon would progress to the fabled Montreal Hockey Club in 1899, and hoist Lord Stanley’s hardware twice during his six seasons with the winged wheelers. Boon would later manage the Montreal Wanderers to a quartet of Stanley Cup championships. Originating from the incomparable autograph collection of E. Robert Hamlyn, we have a vintage photo signed by the early superstar. At 8” x 10” and picturing Boon in his MHC high-neck wool, the 1952 HOF inductee added a beautiful signature over the bottom left. Passing away in 1961, we should note that THIS IS THE FIRST DICKIE BOON SIGNED PHOTO WE HAVE EVER SEEN/OFFERED, AND ONE OF FEW SIGNATURES OF BOON EVER SEEN/OFFERED IN THE HOBBY.
The signature remains completely bold with no issues, with light surface wear to the firmer stock print, with a bit of corner and edge wear. There are also typed and handwritten notations over the reverse including “Autographed Aug 1959”, with a stamp from noted photographer Turofsky.
