Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2020
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/16/2020
Scoring the first goal in the history of the Chicago Black Hawks, William George Hay first averaged over a-point-a-game with the Regina Capitals for four seasons in the early-1920s. The World War I veteran later played for Detroit, spending time with the club as they transitioned from the Cougars to Falcons, and then from the Falcons to Red Wings. Originating from the incomparable autograph collection of E. Robert Hamlyn, we have photo signed by the 1958 HOF inductee, accompanied by a signed handwritten letter. At 8” x 10” and picturing the Winnipegger in his Red Wings uniform, Hay has placed a bold blue ink signature over the bottom left along with a personalization. The 8 ½” x 8 ½” letter is dated Oct 20, 1959, with Hay again adding a gorgeous and dark black ink signature. Leaving us in 1975 at the age of 77, THIS IS THE FIRST GEORGE HAY SIGNED PHOTO WE HAVE EVER OFFERED.
With no issues for the signatures on either item, the photo exhibits light wear and is slightly “rolled” from top to bottom, with typed biographical text over the reverse along with a stamp from noted photographer Turofsky. There is also some spotting along the right side reverse of the photo. The letter shows just light wear, with the right border somewhat crumpled, with no issues for the text or signature, with a pair of punched holes over the top section for binder insertion.
