The brainchild of Wayne Gretzky and friends, the Ninety Nine All Stars Tour was created to promote hockey around the globe as well as raise money for charity during the 1994-95 NHL lockout. Matches were contested against both professional and all-star clubs, with 8 total games played in 5 different countries during the tour. With Doug Wilson chosen as head coach and Wayne taking on assistant duties, others who joined the noteworthy cause included Paul Coffey, Brett Hull, Mark Messier and Steve Yzerman, with the “Ninety-Nine” team winning 5 of the 8 games played, including an 8-5 win over a team of German all-stars on Dec 14th 1994. This “Ninety-Nine Tour” captain’s jersey worn by The Great One was gifted to his godson, Liam Lindstrom, the son of former teammate and close friend/Swedish hockey legend Willy Lindstrom, after the contest played against Djurgardens IF in Stockholm, Sweden.
A CCM Ultrafil construction garment that sports both Maska Ultrafil and size "56" labeling affixed to the inner collar, the underside of the tag displays a pair of still intact "born-on date" stickers reading "94 11", matching others that have come to market. Decorated over the front with “Ninety-Nine” embroidered across the chest in attractive script, the white sweater features affixed tackle twill stars on the upper and lower front, along with a tri-layer captain’s “C” affixed to the left breast, an NHLPA patch appears alongside the distinguished letter over the right side. Sporting LA Gear and Time Warner Interactive sponsorship patches over the shoulders, the sleeves and verso have been accented with Gretzky's famed number "99" in either single or tri-layer tackle twill numerals, "Gretzky" is spelt out in single layer white twill letters across the affixed matching red nameplate, the CCM logo has been twice embroidered in red into the reverse hem. Having had the fight strap cut from the interior, common on Gretzky game jerseys, and a swatch of velcro sewn over the interior hem, the jersey shows game-wear via a handful of stick marks spread throughout the lower front and both sleeves as well as sweat staining around the collar.
Having worn multiple jerseys during the game based on what is seen in the video footage of the contest, screenshots taken from the third period of play appear to show a match to the placement, angles and layering of the "C" over the front as well as the loose white thread that seems to appear at the bottom of the top right corner. Additionally, other screenshots from the third period appear to show correct placement of the "99" on the reverse, the correct placement of the nameplate and letters in "Gretzky" in correlation with the numbers and lastly, a loose thread at the bottom of the top edge in the Time Warner Interactive patch over the right shoulder.
With an image of Gretzky and Liam Lindstrom shown on the listing, the jersey hails directly from the personal collection of Willy Lindstrom and will come accompanied by his signed Letter of Authenticity.
