Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2025
Considered the biggest trade in the history of the sport, Wayne Gretzky officially said goodbye to the Edmonton Oilers and his native homeland as a current Stanley Cup champion in the summer of 1988, and set out for the sunny shores of California, joining the Los Angeles Kings and the American conscience at large. Posting a total of 918 points in only 539 games played in the black and silver over the course of eight (8) years and helping the Kings to their first Stanley Cup Finals appearance in 1993, offered here, we present this photo-matched left glove worn by "The Great One" during his first California based season of 1988-89. A Jofa made model "686 L" glove in Los Angeles' black, white and silver colourway, the glove feature both screened and cloth labels, with “99” decals added over the upper portion of the thumb. Moderate game-use is exhibited on the desirable hand covering, with rubbing and light fraying to the leather in spots along with wear to the identifiers, with the palm also fully intact and showing wear via rubbing from his stick. Regarding the photo-match, the glove is matched with Getty Image #98502956 which is from Los Angeles' March 15th, 1989 game in Montreal (we know this as Chris Kontos is sitting beside Wayne on the bench and it was the only game he ever played in Montreal with Los Angeles) which shows a match to the various stick marks in the grey area as well as to stick marks through the "J" in "Jofa" and a bit of wear to the bottom right corner in the top portion of the "O" in "Jofa" as well.
