Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 9/24/2024
Topping all scorers at the 1987 Canada Cup with 21 points in 9 games, Wayne Gretzky would earn MVP honours at the tournament while leading his nation to gold over the Soviet Union. The only time throughout their careers that Gretzky and Mario Lemieux played on the same forward unit, the pair combined with each other on 29% of Team Canada's goals. Offered here, we present this stick issued to Gretzky for use during the memorable tournament. Wayne’s preferred Titan TPM2020 model with “W. Gretzky” stamped over the upper shaft, the stick, having been issued to him but never used, displays no signs of ever having been taped and has no tape on it. Displaying "1-002" stamped to the lower underside along with date code "9 7809" – which stands for September 9, 1987 (the only remaining games of the tournament after September 9th were the Finals games, played on September 11th, 13th and 15th) the stick displays no signs of game-use but has various marks throughout the shaft and blade, including green and red coloured ones, from handling and storage. Of note, concerning the date stamp, a similar stick used by Wayne during the tournament that displayed the same stamp was sold by Classic as lot #332 in our Spring 2021 auction. With no cracks or structural issues, the stick remains a remarkable specimen from the greatest player to ever play the game. Originally hailing from the personal collection of Brian Skrudland, don't miss out on this one for your all important collection!
