Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/2/2023
Elevating the game like no other in history, Wayne Gretzky remains the sport's quintessential superstar, with his limitless scoring prowess and hockey intelligence never to be matched again. The Great One remains as the only player in over a century of NHL hockey to score north of 200 points in a single season, achieving the feat a miraculous four times. Just as icons Lalique, Stradivarius and Shakespeare reached the pinnacle of their respective fields, there will never be another Wayne Gretzky. Historic and noteworthy items used by the legend to ply his trade are the most desired throughout the hobby, and as such, we are honoured to be able to offer a pair of photo-matched gloves used by the game's greatest during the important, record-setting NHL season of 1985-86. This campaign would see Wayne reach the stratosphere of point accumulation, scoring a completely unheard of total of 215 points, including 163 assists! This is a mind-blowing 2.68 points-per-game throughout the 80-game endeavor, with the Art Ross and Hart Memorial Trophies earned.
Familiar Jofa 686 models in Oilers colour scheme, "99" decals have been affixed to each wrist cuff, with Gretzky signing the wrist guard on the left glove in black marker. The pair show excellent game-use, with marks and wear/rubbing to the leather in numerous spots, primarily over the back section of each hand, while the palms also show additional wear, with some light discolouration. There is also some pilling to the interior of each glove. An included numeric image dated from the 1985-86 season has been matched to the large black mark through the "99" on the cuff of the left glove which extends into the "J" of "Jofa" on the wrist protector below it. The black mark going through the "A" of "Jofa" on the front of the right glove (below the 686) is also visible. Additionally, a second included numeric image also dated from the 1985-86 season has been matched to the large black mark through the "99" on the cuff of the left glove, with the black mark in the "FA" of "Jofa" on the thumb protector also visible. The image is also showing the spot of wear in the middle bottom of the long "J" of the Jofa logo on the thumb protector on the right glove, as well as the correct placement of the "99" on the cuff in correlation with the Jofa logo on the wrist protector below it. An LOA from Classic Auctions will accompany these absolute hobby treasures.
