Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction April 2024

The rarest of all of Wayne Gretzky's game-used sticks, this is a true Gretzky "rookie" gamer used by Wayne with the Edmonton Oilers during the latter part of the 1978-79 season, his first as a pro in the last gasp of the World Hockey Association. This Koho Custom Pro 221 model stick is originally from the collection of Rick "The Stick" Elaschuk, who was an Oilers dressing room attendant dating back to the WHA days and on through the glory years of the 1980s Stanley Cup dynasty. Reportedly, only a dozen of these Koho twigs were produced for Wayne and this example is one of a few we have ever seen offered for sale. The Great One's vintage "To Rick, Best of Luck, Wayne Gretzky" autograph in bold black marker sits on the front of the upper shaft, which has "GRETZKY" factory stamped on the front with Wayne's number "99" written in black marker above that below his vintage original tape job on the knob. Looks to be small bits of tape residue near the heel which is consistent with how Wayne taped his sticks back then. Nice wear along the bottom edge of the blade, which has some chips along the top edge, and plenty of red goalpost paint transfer on the shaft. This museum-worthy piece comes with individual LOAs from Shawn Chaulk and Rick "The Stick" Elaschuk.
