Incredible photo-matched Wayne Gretzky Edmonton Oilers game-worn helmet saw duty in the WHA and during the Great One's first NHL season and first NHL All-Star Game! This blue Jofa Greztky helmet was painted black for Wayne's first NHL All-Star appearance in Detroit in 1980 when Gretz's Campbells wore black helmets with their orange jerseys against Gordie Howe's Wales All-Stars in white. The painted-over Jofa sticker on the right side of this precious and historic lid offers our matches. A photo of Wayne in his WHA Oilers uniform clearly shows the missing piece of the sticker along the top edge from the top of the "O" moving right towards the "F". This missing sticker piece also shows in a photo of Gretzky from his 1979-80 NHL rookie campaign, which also shows the piece of the left side of the sticker that is missing at the top of the "J". Scratches in the "O" and "F" in both photos also show on the painted-over sticker. Hand-cut white 99 decals remain applied to the back of the helmet. Bright orange round Steichen's sticker remains inside the left side of the helmet. "79-80 NHL All-Star Game" is handwritten on a piece of tape inside on the right with a small round Swedish sticker below it. Thin pieces of customized foam padding that were added to the front and back padding remain glued in place. The thin chinstrap is also present, though missing its buckle. Please take note that this lot may be subject to a silent reserve. One of the most desirable Gretzky game-worn helmets in the hobby!
