Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2017
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/8/2017
One of the first netminders to employ a helmet-cage style “mask”, Vladislav Tretiak represented his beloved Russia for over 15 years, primarily through the 1970s. We have an instantly familiar-style helmet/cage combo that was worn by Tretiak circa-1973, with an included numeric image showing Tretiak wearing this exact style of helmet. A Jofa model in Soviet red with the original strapping, padding and harness intact, the white cage/face mask has been affixed by a pair of screws on each side, with the Jofa decals no longer present. The leather chin rest is also intact, with some salting to the attachment screws. Originally acquired by a business man while in Leningrad who saw Russian National Team gear displayed at his hotel’s restaurant (which was also frequented by ZCKA players), the helmet was then purchased from the restaurant “keeper” by the business man as he was told it originally belong to Tretiak – according to the accompanying document of provenance.
We have dated the important helmet to circa-1973 by the type of numbers on the sleeves of the jersey he is wearing, which is also the same type of mask we previously sold of his from the 1973 World Championships. Nice wear is present on the HOF headgear, with marks, scratches and abrasions covering the top and back sections, along with a few small dings/dents to the cage.
**ADDENDUM - Since going to print with our catalog, we have been able to photo-match this important Tretiak game-worn helmet! An included numeric image pictures the Russian legend wearing this very example, with the exact placement of the originally affixed Jofa sticker on the left side perfectly matching, along with the outline of a second circular Swedish-language sticker. The mask on the helmet is also affixed with the mounting bars placed outside the outer shell, again perfectly matching the included image, with other examples exhibiting the mounting bars underneath the shell. The cage itself is also a perfect match in both size and shape.
