Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/23/2021
Originally awarded to the Montreal Canadiens in compensation for dealing Newsy Lalonde to the WHL’s Saskatoon Sheiks, Aurele Joliat proved his worth early to Habs supporters, helping lead the Canadiens to a Stanley Cup championship in just his second NHL season, in 1923-24. The Mighty Atom would only dress for Montreal throughout his HOF career, earning the Hart Memorial Trophy as NHL MVP in 1933-34. We offer a charming original antique framed painting of the early superstar. Oil on board at approx 21 ½” x 22 ½” and exuding a certain folk art quality, Joliat is well depicted, with some artistic licence appropriated for his Habs uniform and CH crest. The painting is set in its original period frame (no glass) at full dimensions of approx 24 ½” x 26”, with surface wear, crazing and toning, along with a few small areas where the finish has chipped away, most notably along the base.
