Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/30/2021
While early hockey team photo postcards are quite difficult to locate, images featuring individual players are all but non-existent, with collectors clamoring for quality examples. This lot features 52 individual player postcards, a group that would take considerable time and energy to replicate. Spanning right from the turn-of-the-century until approx the late-1940s, each specimen features a postal reverse, with many filled-out and mailed. Highlights include a trio rarely seen goaltender images (one is featuring ice polo), followed by an image of a trophy and two female players. There are also groups of players from the same clubs – which is literally unheard of – including seven circa-1910 postcards of players with an “E” team crest, eight circa-1930s postcards including netminder of a youth team with happy face team crests, seven postcards of players with similar “St P” team crests and 10 postcards featuring the 1947-48 PCHL San Diego Skyhawks. There is also a small photo of a youth goaltender in the collection.
The “E” team postcards all show heavy wear, toning and residue from scrapbook removal, with the 1947-48 Skyhawks postcards in beautiful condition showing light wear. The remaining postcards all exhibit moderate wear, with a few examples showing damage.
