Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction April 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 4/30/2024
Enamored by the fledgling game of ice hockey, Frederick Arthur Stanley – then Governor General of Canada – purchased a small trophy bowl in 1892 for ten guineas that would bear his name and become known as the Stanley Cup, with presentation originally designated to the amateur hockey champions of Canada. Serving as Canada's Governor General from 1888 to 1893 and the 16th Earl of Derby, offered here is this lot consisting of five (5) pieces of unique Lord Stanley memorabilia. Leading off with a ceramic drinking tumbler that was likely produced for the appointment of a new guild mayor for England’s northern town of Preston in 1902, the piece shows an image of Lord Stanley over one side with the piece remaining in excellent condition despite a chip to the rim while sporting a "C & W Shufflebottom Of Preston" stamp on the underside. Followed up by other items including a thin tissue paper event program from the 1902 Preston Guild on a single sheet with the image of Stanley at the top, a disbound section of sessional papers from the House of Commons of Canada regarding a presentation by Stanley of Preston at Government House, Ottawa dated June 20, 1891 on the matter of trade between the United States, Canada and Newfoundland and a hardcover book in French by Moliere, dated 1882 from the library of Wellington College (attended by a few of Stanley’s sons) in England with affixed bookplate stating that the edition was donated by Col. F. A. (Frederick Arthur) Stanley, making this a book that once belonged to Lord Stanley himself, all three (3) listed pieces are in good condition with expected wear on them from age but nothing that detracts from their appeal. Concluded with a dated November 10th, 1888 copy of "The Dominion Illustrated" that has an image of Stanley's wife, Lady Stanley of Preston, over the cover, the magazine is like the other items, in good condition for its age while showing some wear such as some tattering to the spine, edges and corners worth noting for accuracy as well as toning/foxing/light staining to the pages.
