Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2025
One of the most unorthodox and determined goaltenders of his era, Tim Thomas battled his way
to NHL superstardom, cementing his legacy with the Boston Bruins, where he captured two
Vezina Trophies, a Conn Smythe Trophy, and a Stanley Cup championship in 2011. Following a
brief hiatus from the game, Thomas returned for the 2013-14 season, splitting time between the
Florida Panthers and Dallas Stars.
Offered here, and hailing directly from Thomas’ personal collection, is this game-worn Florida
Panthers mask, which has been photo-matched to multiple games during the 2013-14
campaign. A Sportmask-made shell custom-painted by Steve Nash/Eyecandyair, this mask
features handwritten details on the interior, reading:
“Custom painted for Tim Thomas of the Florida Panthers @EYECANDYAIR - SEASON - 2013 -
2014 All the best T.T.” with the artist’s signature appears below the inscription.
The mask displays nice game wear, featuring paint cracking on the forehead and around the
mounting holes for the cage screws, along with puck marks and abrasions throughout the shell.
Sporting a white cage up front, this battle-tested mask retains all original padding, a sweatband,
and black strapping harness.
This mask has been photo-matched to multiple games during the 2013-14 season, with the pair
of extra drilled holes on the forehead serving as a defining characteristic. It has been
photo-matched to November 10, 2013 (Getty Images #187615188), November 12, 2013 (Getty
Images #450035073), November 25, 2013 (Getty Images #452117533), and December 6, 2013
(Getty Images #455599821), each image confirming the drilled holes on the forehead while
Thomas was wearing a different cage. By January 7, 2014, Thomas had switched to the current
cage affixed to the mask, and this version has been photo-matched to January 7, 2014 (Getty
Images #463479385), January 9, 2014 (Getty Images #464632623), and January 11, 2014
(Getty Images #464856375), with this image also serving as a photo-match for the cage. A final photo-match to February 1, 2014 (Getty Images #466751661) highlights both the extra drilled holes and notable chipping on the forehead, perfectly aligning with the
mask’s present condition.
A key photo-matched artifact, this mask provides definitive verification of its game use through
multiple confirmed matches, capturing Tim Thomas in action during his final NHL season.
Hailing directly from Tim Thomas’ personal collection and accompanied by his signed Letter of
Authenticity (LOA), this rare collector’s piece represents a legendary goaltender’s final
battle-tested gear in the NHL.
