Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2021

From his time guarding the crease of the Toronto Maple Leafs for a trio of seasons in the mid-1960s, Terry Sawchuk would earn the Vezina Trophy during his inaugural blue and white campaign in 1964-65, and would hoist Lord Stanley’s cup in his final season in Ontario, in 1966-67. This desirable stick was used by the legendary keeper during his time with the Leafs. A CCM Pattern Made Custom Pro model with “Sawchuck” stamped to the upper shaft, Terry’s original white tape over the handle and knob remains intact, along with the black tape originally placed over the upper shaft. Additional tape was added over the paddle and blade, but it is not the original tape applied to Sawchuk’s specifications. The stick does sport shaved edges along the top sections of the paddle, with this a customization known to Sawchuk gamers. Considering the customization along with both tape jobs, the stick was most likely used first by Sawchuk, and then possibly later by an unknown player. Sawchuk game-used sticks are some of the most desirable from the era.
Sporting heavy wear from both use and later storage and age, the stick does have tears to the tape and cracks to the blade and upper paddle, with some separations to the material at the heel section. There is also dirt staining to the blade. Despite the condition woes, the lumber remains completely solid and displays admirably. Originally gifted to a neighbor of Tim Horton’s during the era Sawchuk was with the Leafs, the stick has been in the family of our consignor for approx 55 years.
