One of the most gifted defenceman during the glorious Original Six era, Red Kelly first blossomed under the tutelage of Leafs great Joe Primeau while still a teenager at St. Michael’s College, moving up to the Detroit Red Wings shortly before his 20th birthday in 1947. Thirteen seasons would be spent in the Motor City, with an impressive four Stanley Cups garnered along the way as well as the James Norris Memorial Trophy the inaugural season it was awarded in 1953-54. An 8-year stint followed back in his home province with the Maple Leafs, with another four world championships won while also taking on a position as a Member of Parliament during his Leafs tenure. The recipient of three Lady Byng Trophies as the NHL's most gentlemanly player, Kelly also earned four First Team All-Star berths, and was selected for enshrinement within hockey's house of holy for his remarkable career in 1969.
Hailing from a Stanley Cup championship season, we are elated to be able to offer Red Kelly's 1962-63 Toronto Maple Leafs wool sweater, and it`s been photo-matched! Currently void of labeling along the collar, an attractive off-white Leafs team crest has been utilized, with blue accent threading along with “Toronto Maple Leafs” affixed in thin tackle twill. A large “4” has been sewn to verso, with smaller examples gracing each sleeve in matching material. Dual white striping bands over the sleeves and just above the lower hem add to the garment’s vintage aesthetics, with the collar featuring four-eyelet configuration over tie-neck construction. Surviving in miraculous condition with a clean blue surface along with bright white striping accents, just some light discolouration/staining to the numbers and team crest need to be mentioned, with high-grade specimens from the era rarely found in this superior condition.
According to photographic evidence, the Maple Leafs wore this particular style of jersey in their Stanley Cup championship season of 1962-63. Regarding the previously mentioned photo-match, the particularities of the team crest match beautifully with our photographic imagery, and a ghost image of our team crest has also been superimposed over the included numeric images (2), showing perfect placement between the pair. Considering both Kelly’s stature as one of the NHL’s all-time greatest defenceman, along with the fact that he greatly contributed to famous dynasties with two different clubs, this Leafs wool sweater should and will garner serious attention from collectors. A Classic LOA will accompany, and please take note that this item may be subject to a silent reserve.
