Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2017
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/7/2017
First appearing at sporting goods retailers and hardware stores in the early-1900s, Spalding produced “autograph” model sticks for decades, with a varied list of early superstars and icons featured including Sprague Cleghorn, Jack Laviolette, Lester Patrick and Percy LeSueur. We have a seldom-seen Lionel Conacher example that hails most likely from the late-1920s, possibly early-1930s. A full-size adult model, “Lionel Conacher” appears boldly along both sides of the shaft in script, along with “Spalding” and “Regulation”. Remnants of the striping accent are present, with additional stamps on the upper shaft. Completely solid, tape over the blade and lower shaft remains, with this doing little to affect the display value. This is the first “Big Train” signature model stick we’ve had the pleasure of handling.
