Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2017
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/7/2017
Visible within existing turn-of-the-century hockey imagery, we have an exceptionally rare pair of circa-1910 outer shin guards, along with an early and scarce-style pair of gloves that hail from roughly the same time period, or just shortly after. Reeded leather and designed to wear on the outside of the uniform as evidenced by numerous surviving photographs, padding – most likely horse hair, has been added to the sections of the shin guards that rest atop each foot, with intact leather strapping also present. The gloves are reeded as well, with asbestos linings along each cuff, with a “quilted” pattern utilized along both the front and back sections. Equipment of this quality from the game’s formative years is all but non-existent.
The shin guards remain in wonderful original condition with supple leather, with just some minor soiling to the interior cloth. The gloves exhibit heavy wear, especially to the palms, with considerable rubbing to the leather. There are also small holes along each thumb, with the horse hair padding visible on the left glove.
