Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Winter 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/28/2023
Gaining legitimacy with the addition of former Stanley Cup champion Tom Howard of the Winnipeg Victorias just after the turn of the century, the New York Wanderers played seven seasons in the American Amateur Hockey League between 1903 and 1914 and won the championship title in 1903–04. The 1909-10 roster featured the toughest and most feared player in history with Sprague Cleghorn during his first professional hockey season, along with fellow HOFer Cooper Smeaton. This unique never-before-seen oversized silk and linen pillow case features an imprinted photograph of the 1909-10 Wanderers including Sprague Cleghorn, his brother Odie, and Cooper Smeaton. At approx 25" x 26", with an image area of 16" x 18", the full team is pictured, with the photo projecting well. There are a few fold lines and some dirt staining to the linen - with this possibly cleanable, with some minor fraying to the silk. Items featuring Cleghorn during his playing days are almost impossible to find. This is the only example of this prized and historic piece Classic Auctions has ever seen or handled. From the Brent Sobie antique hockey and baseball collection.
