Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2025
Highly desirable and rarely seen, these vintage Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs pennants were premiums issued by Quaker Oats during the company's many promotions beginning in the late-1930s and running through the 1940s. According to Bobby Burrell's invaluable Vintage Hockey Collector books, the Canadiens pennant was available as early as 1938-39, with this style pennant offered as a premium throughout a number of years until circa 1950. While matching in style, the Leafs pennant was apparently available throughout most of the 1940s, again until circa 1950 (in 1938-39, the Leafs pennant differed in style with "NHL Champions" as part of the design). The Habs pennant is 16" in length, while the Leafs pennant is an inch longer at 17", with both sporting intact tassels. Both show minor wear from age, with some faint red colouring visible throughout the white lettering, leaf and border on the Toronto pennant.
