Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2018

Given the lofty title of “The Greatest Canadian in History” by the similarly-named CBC television show in 2004, Tommy Douglas was born in Scotland, with his family immigrating to Canada in 1910 and living in Winnipeg. First rising to prominence as an elected member of the House of Commons of Canada in 1935, Douglas became the Saskatchewan Premier after a landslide victory in 1944, forming the first socialist government in North America. Implementing the universal healthcare system eventually adopted by the Federal Government, Douglas would also go on to be the first leader of the NDP. We have a paperback copy of “Saskatchewan Harvest” that has been signed by the iconic politician, with the signature dedicated to a Dr Thompson and his wife, likely Robert N. Thompson, the Albertan politician. Signed on the free-front endpaper in fountain pen, the text reads “To Dr and Mrs Thompson, Carnduff Sask. Remembering your many kindnesses to me on July 4th 1955”. The signature and inscription display especially well, with just light wear to the paperback itself, including some minor creasing.
