Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction November 2015
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/3/2015
Magnificent silver plated miniature replica of hockey's most coveted prize commemorates the Pittsburgh Penguins' second consecutive Stanley Cup championship at the conclusion of the 1991-92 season. And what a finish it was! The Pens reeled off 11 straight playoff victories, including four in the finals against Chicago. The Black Hawks had won 11 straight heading into the finals but were no match for the defending champs, led by the one and only Mario Lemieux. The Penguins' captain won the Conn Smythe Trophy for the second year in a row despite being limited to 15 games because of injury. Lemieux still produced 16 goals and 34 points to join Bernie Parent as the only players to be named playoff MVP in consecutive seasons. He received some fine offensive help along the way from the likes of Stevens, Francis, Jagr, Tocchet and Murphy, while Tom Barraso was solid in carrying the whole load in goal. Their names are engraved along with those of their teammates in three columns on the barrel of this stunning keepsake. Above are the names of coaches Bowman, Johnson, Kehoe, McGuire, Meloche, Smith and Paterson, as well as the team's hierarchy, led by owner Howard Baldwin. The Penguins needed seven games to get past Washington and then lost two of their first three second-round games against New York. A 5-4 overtime win in Game 4 sent Pittsburgh on its way as they ran off 11 straight wins, including consecutive sweeps over Boston and Chicago. Rich brown felt covers the bottom of the black wood base of this great Stanley Cup trophy which exhibits minor scuffing/scratching but remains in excellent condition overall. This example is identical to those awarded to each member of the winning team by the National Hockey League in a tradition dating back to 1958.
