Linked to three noteworthy Beantowners including HOF inductee Cam Neely, we have a vintage Boston Bruins jersey with an interesting history. Originally produced for use in 1982-83 by one of the club’s top ten all-time leading scorers in Peter McNab (McNab was the only player to wear the #8 during the era, but despite searching through hundreds of period images in our database including 30 photos from 1982-83 alone, we were unable to locate images of him wearing the offered specimen. As such, it is unknown if it was indeed worn by McNab and we should note that we can't spot any clear evidence of a former nameplate). The jersey is photo-matched to a studio pose of Jim Nill from 1984-85 most likely done for preseason publicity. This is followed by a pair of matched images of Cam Neely including a locker room studio pose (image used in the 1986-87 Bruins media guide) and an on-ice publicity photo, with Neely holding what appears to be a Louis Sleigher #25 stick in each (Sleigher’s last season was in 1985-86). Considering the additional wear to the jersey not seen in the two Neely images, it is entirely possible that the jersey was worn by Neely in the 1986-87 preseason, making it his first Beantown sweater! A detailed LOA document will accompany this black and gold treasure.
Sporting heavy wear to the material throughout, there are marks and material pulls over the front and sleeves, with heavy burns and paint transfer in a number of areas, including over both sleeves and near the reverse seams. There is also pilling to the collar, with two team repairs on the lower front including a large example on the front band, with a gold stitching repair to the inner right sleeve. We should further note that each sleeve was slightly “taken in”, with the circumference shortened throughout each sleeve length. Regarding the photo-matches, the Nill image has been matched to some of the red paint transfer marks on the upper left sleeve and to details of the team crest including loose threads. The Neely locker room image has been matched to some of the red paint transfer marks on the upper left sleeve and to details of the team crest including loose threads, with the team repair on the front band also showing, while the on-ice image has been matched to some of the red paint transfer marks on the upper left sleeve.
