Taking place in Prague shortly before the outset of World War II, the 1938 IIHF World Hockey Championships featured fourteen competing nations including Nazi Germany, with Canada meeting Great Britain in the final. Represented by the Sudbury Wolves – finalists as Team Canada at both the 1938 and 1949 World Championships – the Canadians would defeat the British 3-1 to claim the nation’s tenth world championship. We have an absolutely spectacular group of items hailing from the tournament, with each originating from Wolves’ team member Percy Allen including his Sudbury Wolves Team Canada jersey, 1938 gold medals (2), Scottish-style tournament cap and “Faded Glory” booklet that chronicles the team and tournament.
Previously framed and featured on the cover of Faded Glory, the Wolves wool sweater is void of any labeling. Styled with individual green “Sudbury Wolves” felt letters layered over a thick white felt plate with green accent trim, a stylized maple leaf in matching green with affixed “Canada” in red sits directly beneath. “5” in green felt is affixed to verso, with red and blue striping bands over the lower hem, collar and cuffs utilized. With just light wear overall to the cream-coloured wool, a few faint marks are visible, along with small team repairs over the front, reverse and sleeves. There are also a few minor stains, with the vintage garment measured-out to roughly a size 42. Regarding the gold medals, one is square (2 ½” x 2 ½”) and features an embossed generic player with “Praha 1938” on the obverse along with additional text on the reverse, while the second circular medal (2” diameter) feature’s “World Championship” in French along with “1938” on the obverse, with the image of a generic netminder on the reverse. Both medals survive in wonderful condition, with light wear and scratches present on the circular medal (a grommet was also once attached along the top to facilitate hanging, but it has since broken off). A unique offering, this historic collection is definitely museum-quality. Please take note that this item may be subject to a silent reserve.
We should also note regarding the medals, the square example has "Mincovna Kremnica" on one edge and "bronz" and "pozlaceno" on another edge which translates to gold-plated bronze, with the words "World and European Ice Hockey Championship", number I, and "World Champion" (translated from Czech) on the reverse. The cap is beige wool with a red, white and blue pom pom, along with a flag emblem with Union Jack affixed. No label is present, with just light wear exhibited. The Faded Glory booklet contains wonderful photos of the team and tournament along with copies of pertinent newspaper clippings and program pages, with both the jersey featured on the cover along with a team photo in the book that pictures the Wolves wearing the same caps as the example offered. There is also an in-depth report on the Wolves Memorial and Allan Cup runs as well as their full European excursion, with a complete tournament breakdown including schedule and results. Well designed and thought-out, it would take considerable time and effort as well as resources – if even possible - to replicate all of the interesting items, photos and information within the booklet.
Described as “perhaps the smallest man on the club”, Percy Allen played in England and with the Toronto Dukes, and was considered one of the finest stickhandlers on the Wolves where he was also the team veteran.
