Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/30/2021
Joining once again, in collaboration with the Montreal Canadiens, Classic Auctions is pleased to offer a large collection of artifacts and memorabilia from the storied club's comprehensive archives. A number of historic specimens direct from the famous team including unique displays that were once marvelously displayed in the hallowed Montreal Forum and later at the Bell Centre are available, with an endless array of legendary and monumental players featured that all proudly once donned the sacred jersey of the mighty Montreal Canadiens.
Regarded as the greatest lacrosse player during the early years of the 20th Century, Edouard “Newsy” Lalonde was equally skilled at hockey, with his goal scoring prowess and highly accurate snap shot legendary. The Flying Frenchman would serve as scoring champion seven times in four different leagues including the NHA, PCHA, NHL and WHL, with HOF enshrinement occurring in 1950. Originally displayed at the hallowed Montreal Forum and most likely later at the Bell Centre, we have a framed painting of Newsy Lalonde by noted Habs artist Michel Lapensee. At approx 11” x 15” and executed in water colours, Lalonde is perfectly depicted, with his name and tenure listed on the matte (the text appears to have been “pressed-on”, with some letters misplaced. It should read "1932-34/1934-35"). The artist has signed, adding the date (1992), with the work double-matted and framed to approx 19” x 23”. The unique painting is flawless, with light wear to the frame including a few blemishes. An LOA from Classic Auctions will be included.
