Founded as the Kansas City Scouts in 1974, the Scouts moved to Denver in 1976 and became the Colorado Rockies. In 1982, the team relocated again, this time to East Rutherford, New Jersey, to become the New Jersey Devils. In forty years of competing in the NHL, the Devils have won 9 Division championships, 5 Conference championships and a trio of Stanley Cups. Offered here, we present this New Jersey Devils jersey that dates from circa-1986 and is attributed to have worn by multiple players. Made by CCM, the ultrafil construction garment sports a partially detached born-on date tag reading "85 10" affixed to the inner collar above a sewn in Gerry Cosby label that displays a size "50" designation. Accented over the reverse hem with an embroidered CCM logo and a rubberized Gerry Cosby logo alongside it, the front of the jersey is decorated with a Devils team crest in layered tackle twill while the number "14" has been sewn to the sleeves and verso in dual layer red-over-green tackle twill numerals. Known for using a mishmash of jerseys in this era that were recycled from one year into another with a variety of customization styles, a mesh nameplate with "Stewart" spelt out across it in matching red-over-green letters is glued to the upper reverse while heavy glue residue from other previously applied plates is seen and felt both above and below the one that is currently affixed. Presumably for Alan Stewart, who played four (4) for the Devils in 1985-86 wearing the number "14" in January, two others also wore the number including Pat Conacher for two (2) games in February and Dan Dorion for three (3) games in April. Additionally, the Devils started the 1985-86 season wearing mesh jerseys by CCM and it is conceivable that the currently applied nameplate is from one of those offerings or an earlier one that was made up for Stewart and was then affixed to this jersey for use in a later years pre-season as they were known to do based on previous examples that we have handled and others that have come to market. Exhibiting light-to-moderate game-use via stick marks over the front and both sleeve and a good board burn over the right elbow, spot stains are also observed throughout the garment as well, heaviest over the left sleeve and right side of the collar which has been vented at bottom. Of note, the jersey is accompanied by a Devils LOA stating that the jersey was worn by Stewart during the 1985-86 season as well as a MeiGray COR. ADDENDUM - a noted Devils collector points out that the jersey being offered is likely a 1986-87 season offering based on the tagging style that is seen affixed to the inner collar. Of note, both Stewart and Doug Brown wore the "14" during the year with Stewart wearing it for seven (7) games in early January and at the end of March/beginning of April while Brown wore it for four (4) games in mid March between the 13th and 18th.
