Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2024
A staple in the City of Montreal between 1896–1960 who at times served as as a farm club of Major League teams such as the Philadelphia Athletics, Pittsburgh Pirates and Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers, the Montreal Royals remain famous for being the minor league club where Jackie Robinson got his start before ascending to the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. Having won league titles in 1898, 1922, 1941, 1946, 1948, 1949, 1951, 1953 and 1958, with the 1946 Royals recognized as one of the 100 greatest minor league teams of all time, offered here is this collection of Royals programs totaling seventeen (17) that includes examples from the 1920s to the 1950s. Paced by an example from the 1946 Little World Series that pitted the Royals against the Louisville Colonels and saw Jackie Robinson listed in the lineup, also included are programs from 1928 (Septemeber 2nd vs Toronto at Maple Leaf Stadium in Toronto - front cover tattered and torn off), 1942 (vs Toronto at Maple Leaf Stadium in Toronto), 1945 (April/May, June or July vs Newark at Ruppert Stadium in Newark), 1947 (April 20th vs Baltimore at Municipal Stadium in Baltimore - Roy Campanella on roster for Montreal - heavy wear to the covers) and (August 6th vs Rochester at Silver Stadium in Rochester - Roy Campanella in lineup for Montreal - cover shows heavy wear), 1948 (April 26th vs Rochester at Silver Stadium in Rochester - Don Newcombe on roster for Royals - heavy wear to back cover) and (October 5th to 8th - Games 1 to 3 - Junior World Series vs St. Paul at Lexington Park in St. Paul - Don Newcombe on roster for Royals), 1949 (June, July or August vs Rochester at Silver Stadium in Rochester - small amount of paper loss to front cover), 1950 (July 28th to 30th vs Syracuse at Silver Stadium in Rochester - Tommy Lasorda in lineup for Montreal), 1953 (August 13th vs Rochester at Silver Stadium in Rochester - Tommy Lasorda in lineup for Montreal), 1954 (May 9th vs Toronto at Maple Leaf Stadium in Toronto - Roberto Clemente and Tommy Lasorda in lineup for Montreal - wear and tear to covers plus spine) and (September 19th vs Rochester at Silver Stadium in Rochester - International League Semi-Finals Game 4 - Roberto Clemente on roster for Montreal), 1957 (April 28th vs Richmond at Parker Field in Richmond), 1958 (May/June vs Rochester at Silver Stadium in Rochester - Tommy Lasorda and Sparky Anderson on roster for Montreal) and (September 29th - Game 4 - Junior World Series vs Minneapolis at Metropolitan Stadium in Minneapolis - Tommy Lasorda and Sparky Anderson on roster for Montreal) and finally, 1960 (May, July or August/September vs Buffalo at Offermann Stadium in Buffalo - Tommy Lasorda on roster for Montreal) and (vs Jersey City at Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City - toning and wear throughout). All showing varying signs of wear with the heaviest examples pointed out above, some of the included programs are scored on the interior in either pen or pencil while some have written notations in other areas as well, including over the front and reverse covers.
