Five fantastic photos of the old and new Montreal Forums’ famous façades are featured in this phenomenal lot. Included here among these five photos originally from the collection of Montreal Canadiens public relations guru Camil Desroches are two vintage Rice Studios 8x10 prints of the Forum as it looked not long after it opened in 1924 with a row of Model-T Fords parked in front. A circa 1970s/1980s original David Bier 5 1/2" x 14” photo with the photographer’s name embossed in the bottom right corner depicts the old Forum’s façade decades later prior to its 1968 renovation, which is shown in two 5x7 prints.
The two Rice photos, which each measure a shade under 8x10, are two versions of the same image taken from the southwest corner of Atwater and Ste-Catherine. One appears to be the original version of the photo with streetcar trolley electrical wires crisscrossing overhead, and the other photo had the sky whited out with a trio of flags added in pencil across the façade. The retouched photo has “Rice Studio” and “Camil Desroches” stamps on the reverse and various handwritten notations. The original photo has adhesive residue on its margins on the front and a blank reverse.
The David Bier photo has a vertical crease through the far right side and a “Photo David Bier” stamp on the reverse.
The new Montreal Forum’s modern façade is on display in two 5x7 photos. One is a shot of the architects’ rendering with “Montreal Forum Canadian Arena Company” along the bottom margin below an illustration of the Ste-Catherine Street entrance. The other photo from the corner of Atwater and Ste-Catherine is stamped and dated “Ed Kelly Photo Montreal” and “May 31 1973” on the reverse.
