Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/26/2019
The last-living player to have suited up against the fabled Montreal Maroons, Milt Schmidt continued to serve the Boston Bruins organization after retiring, with his acquisitions of Phil Esposito, Ken Hodge and Fred Stanfield instrumental in the Bruins success during the early-1970s. We have a trio of awards that were presented to the 1961 HOF inductee, with each originating from his personal collection and obtained directly from his family. Included, we have the Hockey News “Annual Award” for 1956-57 presented to Milt while coaching, for his leading the Bruins to the Stanley Cup finals, followed by a 1972 city of Boston Letter of Achievement for clinching the Prince of Wales Trophy, wishing Milt good luck for 1972 Stanley Cup playoffs. Finally, we have a John Gillooly Memorial Award plaque dated March 10 1973, presented to Milt for his “Accomplishments in the National Hockey League” as “Player Coach Manager”. An LOA from the Schmidt family will accompany.
The Hockey News award feature’s a silver seal within the bottom left, with “Milt Schmidt” handwritten in black marker. Set in a modest frame to full dimensions of approx 10 ½” x 12 ½”, the document exhibits toning along with a few wrinkles within the bottom left, with some small areas of what appears to be mold on the underside of the glass. The Boston Letter of Achievement is 8 ½” x 11” and framed to 10” x 13”, with a seal within the bottom left and a signature from the City Clerk. The document appears to exhibit just light toning, with light wear to the frame. Lastly, the John Gillooly Award was established for the columnist by the New England Patriots directors, with this example presented to Milt in 1973. At 11” x 15” the scroll-carved wooden plaque feature’s a gold metal plate with engraved particulars, with just minimal wear to the plaque including along the top section where a small crack is visible, with a few scratches to the affixed metal plate.
