Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2025
The younger brother of Saku Koivu who was drafted 6th overall by the Minnesota Wild at the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, Mikko Koivu would play a total of 1035 games over the course of his National Hockey League career, with all but seven (7) of them spent in a Minnesota uniform. Suiting up in the blue and white of Finland on numerous occasions over the course of his career, winning Olympic medals in 2006 (silver) and 2010 (bronze), Koivu would also help his country to many IIHF World Championship medals as well, including a gold in 2011. Offered here, we present this Team Finland captain's jersey worn by Koivu at the 2012 IIHF World Championships on home ice in Helsinki, Finland against Team Slovakia on May 6th. Made by Nike, a "swoosh" logo and a size "60" designation are screened to the inner collar along with a matching "Made in Canada" notation and an "IIHF Authentic Collection" label that has been sewn in. Sporting an IIHF logo patch that has been sewn on over the reverse hem, the garment, sporting a throwback heritage design with blue stripes over the front, hem on both sides and shoulders, is decorated over the front with a Finland coat of arms lion team crest that features embroidered details while "Suomi" is spelt out above in individually applied single layer blue twill letters. Also having had Finnair sponsorship patches added over both sleeves and the distinguished captain's "C" over the left breast, the sleeves and verso have been styled with Koivu's number "9" in sewn on single layer blue twill numerals while "Koivu" is spelt out in matching style letters that have been heat pressed across the affixed matching nameplate at the top of the reverse. Retaining a fight strap on the interior and a Nike Team Sports barcode that has been heat pressed inside the reverse hem, the jersey shows wear via stick marks over the front and right sleeve as well as a board burn/unrepaired hole and light red board paint transfer marks over the right sleeve as well. Regarding the video-match, the jersey is matched to footage from Finland's game against Slovakia on May 6th, 2012 which shows a bit of the stick mark over the front of the jersey below the "S" in "Suomi". A Finnish Ice Hockey Association COA will accompany the piece.
