Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2024
Likely the greatest natural goal scorer the game of hockey has ever seen throughout its expansive history, Mike Bossy would first gain notoriety while playing with the Laval National of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and would be drafted twice in 1977, once at 15th overall by the National Hockey League's New York Islanders and once at 44th overall by the Indianapolis Racers of the rival World Hockey Association. Choosing the route of the NHL, Bossy would go on to play a total of 752 games in the league over the course of ten (10) seasons, all in the uniform of the Islanders, and helped them to four (4) straight Stanley Cup championships between 1980 and 1983, claiming the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP in 1982 also. Potting a total of 573 goals across his time in the league and holding the NHL record for the most consecutive fifty (50) goal seasons with nine (9) straight fruitful campaigns, Bossy would retire from the game after the 1986-87 season and go on to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1991. Answering the call of his country on a pair of occasions to participate in the best-on-best Canada Cup tournaments in 1981 and 1984, Bossy's second go round in the red and white of Team Canada would be more memorable than the first as he would score the overtime winning goal of the semi-final against the Soviet Union to set up a best-of-three (3) final series against Sweden, whom Bossy and Canada would sweep away in two (2) games. Offered here, we present this stick used by Bossy as a member of Team Canada at the 1984 Canada Cup. A red coloured Titan Turbo model offering with "M. Bossy" stamped over the lower shaft, Bossy's number "22" has been penned over the upper shaft in partially worn black marker ink while a date stamp reading "SEP 7 1984" is found on the underside of the lower shaft, indicating that it was likely used in one (1) of the final three (3) games. Retaining its original red tape job around both the handle/knob and blade, the stick displays good use including numerous black coloured marks throughout the shaft that are heaviest over the lower shaft while the same areas show a number of other abrasions as well. Also sporting light marks over both sides of the blade tape, wear is present over the underside as well via some tears that are worth noting for accuracy.
