Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 9/24/2024
Most likely hailing from the Stanley Cup championship season of 1952-53, as we have previously sold a matching model with all stamps identically placed, we have a stick used by the legendary Rocket Richard. Leading the Montreal Canadiens in goals, assists, points and penalty minutes, Richard saw action in all 70 games in 1952-53, and led the Habs to defeat Boston in the Stanley Cup finals in just 5 games. A CCM Pattern-Made model with “9” stamped to the upper shaft, additional stamps grace each side of the lower shaft from the Habs team supplier, Raymond Hardware. The original black tape remains over the blade and knob, with the original three blue striping accents intact. There is a blade crack beneath the tape, with the important lumber showing great game-use, including a number of stick and puck marks to the lower shaft as well as some red paint transfer. There is also wear to the underside blade, especially at the heel. Originally from Maurice Richard's personal collection and first sold in the 2002 Maurice Richard auction, the stick was most likely kept by the Rocket for an important moment or milestone in his career which we haven't been able to identify. It should be noted that Maurice Richard did pass Nelson Stewart as the all time NHL leading goal scorer when he scored his 325th NHL goal during the 1952-53 season. A Richard family LOA will accompany.
